Meet the Fairchild Hiller FH-227, which is a longer version of the Fairchild F-27 which in turn was an Americanised version of the Fokker F 27 Friendship (it gained a hyphen).
The 227 grew by 1.83m over the plain 27, giving it 16 more seats and more luggage capacity. Just 78 were made which is probably just as well because 23 of them crashed, usually at or near take off or landing. The most famous incident happened in the Andes in 1972 when a Uruguayan Air Force 227 crashed in what became known as the Andes flight disaster and formed the basis for books, films and endless amounts of horrified fascination as the survivors remained so by eating the less fortunate.
